Knitscene Fall 2014 Issue

Yesterday my issue of Knitscene Fall 2014 came in the mail, and since I had been seeing some of the patterns on Ravelry and Pinterest, I was excited to look more closely at some of the patterns and see if there were any that I would be interested in knitting.

Since I'm a big sweater/clothing knitter, Knitscene is a good knitting magazine for me since it's mostly clothing patterns. This issue does have several accessory patterns, which is nice, although the only one that really jumped out at me is the Larimer scarf, although I don't think I would do the fringe - I think it's just a bit much.

There are quite a few sweater patterns that I like as well, namely Berneray pullover , East Neuk hoodie, Callanish cardigan, and Block Island sweater. I'm also very pleased that all of these are knit in worsted weight or aran yarn, because my stash is mostly worsted weight and I'm still getting over my aversion to knitting large projects (or really any project at all) in a very small gauge. Strangely, the hoodie is knit with a size three(!) needled and worsted weight, which seems really odd to me. I might still knit that pattern because it was one of my favorites in this issue, but I would probably choose some of the other patterns in this issue over that one because the gauge is so small.

It's nice that many of the patterns are very practical and seem like nice everyday-type sweaters, and I think a few would work really well to be part of my wardrobe for student teaching and eventually teaching. The Berneray pullover in particular I could see as being a good sweater to wear with nice jeans or khakis and it could be easily dressed up for work or dressed down for everyday wear.

I also liked that there are a few patterns for men in this issue, since it's way too difficult to find decent (and stylish) patterns for men's clothing. I would really like to knit my boyfriend a sweater at some point, although he resists this idea for some reason, probably because he actually knows how much time and effort I would put into it and I think he's worried he wouldn't wear it often enough to justify the work I put in.

Although I think most people (including myself) get these magazines mostly for the patterns, I was disappointed that this issue didn't seem to have interesting articles. Some of the ones they've had in the past have been really interesting and informational, but this issue seemed to kind of fall flat on that front, sadly.

Overall I'm pretty pleased with the pattern selection in this issue, there's probably five or six patterns I really like and might knit at some point, which is pretty decent for a magazine issue. It's hard to say how many I will actually get around to knitting, but I do think the scarf at least will be a project for the near future!
